Letter to Congregation - Church Services Cancelled
To the members and friends of Mount Pleasant Church,
I am cancelling worship for the next two Sundays in Lent (March 15 & 22). As I have followed the news from many different sources about the current virus pandemic, this thought has lingered in the back of my mind. We gather around 200 souls each Sunday and each of us are in many places throughout our communities daily. The risk may be low, but it is a risk I am unwilling to take with the lives of the people I love.
My decision comes from time in prayer and reflection on input from healthcare professionals, denominational leadership, and governmental leaders. The situation in Italy is a striking example of what could happen. Because the virus can live on a non-human surfaces for so long, we need to do what we can to slow the risk of spreading. Here are some suggestions:
- Pay close attention to what you touch. Do not touch your face.
- Wash your hands. Use hand sanitizer if you can’t get to a sink.
- Avoid close human contact (hugs and handshakes can wait)
- In a store, use a disinfectant wipe to clean the cart
- Use automatic doors when possible
- Avoid public restrooms
Hopefully, we will be able to gather again for worship by the Fifth Sunday in Lent (March 29). In the meantime, I am preparing a home worship guide for the congregation. I will have it to you by email and also available on the church website by Sunday, March 15 at 10:00 a.m. Remember you can use online giving or the USPS for your tithes and offerings.
